Practical cherishing

You can spend 5 1/2 years writing a book on youth ministry and still forget amazing stories until it's too late! Here's one of them.

A girls' small group decide to treat my wife and I to a night out. One of them turns up with a couple of cinema tickets to the latest Bond movie. They stay and babysit and we go out. They even remember to bring a big bag of popcorn for us. They explain it is a gift and they won't take any payment for the babysitting.

Stories like this remind me, when it's tough to keep going, that young people do appreciate the ministry we do. They also encourage me to keep raising the bar in how I cherish other people. Am I that generous with my care, my time and my money?

Of course, this isn't just about youth ministry, nearly all of us need to learn how to be kinder towards one another. What could we do today to raise the bar - going above and beyond in terms of kindness?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5.22-23
