training for leaders

How can you work to break down seemingly self-contained groups within the whole group?

Truths, values, skills, habits

When you look at the big picture of your youth ministry, do you ever think about what you're actually trying to do long-term? I found this really useful - thinking through:

Truths: What we want people to know

Values: What we want people to find important

Skills: What skills we want people to have

Habits: What we want people to do habitually

Why not download the handout, ask your leaders to fill it in independently and discuss? Push it a bit further, and ask the youth parents too! And let's not forget the youth!

Who am i becoming?

My friend, Jack Percey created this simple idea. You could also use it for your young people, but try it with your leaders. Quarter a piece of A4 paper. Title each quarter:

Top left:  Today

Top right:  In a year's time

Bottom left:  In three years (or you could put 5 )

Bottom right:  In eternity

Then ask this question: How do you want your own character to have grown in each timescale? In other words, how do you want to have grown by the end of today? Who do you want to become? Who would you like to be? Give people a few ideas to start them off.

TRAINING PASSPORT FOR YOUTH LEADERS

If you're a senior youth leader and want to encourage your youth leaders to come along to training, why not introduce training passports? Designed by my friend and colleague, Jack Percey, these provide a way to record training undertaken and will encourage you to provide more training. Leaders can record training undertaken under each stamp. The original icons can also be downloaded for the use of your church youth ministry.

Simply, print the passport, fold it in half lengthways, then concertina it. Then you'll just need to run some training!

STILL NOT SURE HOW IT COULD WORK?

Here's an example of an event we ran. Short talk to start then leaders could choose three seminars out of a choice of nine to go to.

Too big?

That's OK, don't give them a choice. People often say to us they wanted to go to all of them, so let them.

If they stay in Room 1, they get a date under Health and Safety for Risk Assessment, under Bible for The Big Idea, and under Current Issues for Mental Health.

Then time to pray together.

ACCIDENTS WAITING TO HAPPEN

Click below to check out these photos of health and safety dangers. Use them to help train your leaders. Or springboard off them and find your own. Either way, help your leaders to think about the worst case scenario. Then those will probably never happen.
